BulletDSA Kicks off Merchandise Program

In its continuing efforts to enhance Association revenues and contribute to the well being of the membership, the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of Alameda County kicked off its merchandising program on Monday, July 28, 2008 with the sales of the departmental Class D uniform cap.

Elegant glass table coasters with the department's 150th year anniversary badge etched in white are also on sale at the DSA office, which is located at 6689 Owens Drive Suite 100 in Pleasanton.  A set of two coasters, which are offered exclusively through the DSA, can be purchased for $30.

The DSA Board of Directors established a Merchandising Committee, co-chaired by DSA Treasurer Jon Rudolph and Secretary Tim O'Connell, in the spring of 2008.  The committee spent several months installing a computerized inventory system so that sales can be accurately tracked, identifying products to market and applying for a permit to collect sales tax from the State Franchise Tax Board.  The committee reports to the full DSA Board of Directors at each of the Board's twice-monthly meetings.

Proceeds from the sales of merchandise will be used to supplement the DSA General fund and to support the Association's community relations efforts.  The Merchandising Committee is currently working on a means of marketing DSA products through an online store on the Association's website at www.acsodsa.org.  The committee is also pricing a sales display case to be installed at the DSA Office.  A broad line of DSA products will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

"Many public safety associations across the country sell merchandise to support their efforts, so there is a ready blue print the committee has been following to get this program established," DSA President Marty Neideffer said.  "Jon and Tim have done an exceptional job getting this going and DSA members will be the beneficiaries of their hard work and the success of this program."

Sheriff Greg Ahern changed the manufacturer and other specifications of the baseball style cap worn with the Class D uniform, and he provided the DSA exclusive authorization to sell the cap as a fundraising item.  The new hat can only be purchased at the Deputy Sheriffs' Association office in Pleasanton.

"Sheriff Ahern's goal when designing this cap was to update the general design and display the pride we all have in this agency, as well as the "Thin Blue Line" that we represent in protecting society," Assistant Sheriff Steve Roderick stated in a departmental memorandum announcing the uniform change.  The new cap is navy blue and features a custom embroidered Sheriff's Office logo as well as other unique features.  The cap will also have your badge number embroidered into the left rear quarter panel of the cap.  Exact specifications have been updated in the department's rules and regulations.

Sales of the hat began July 28 and will continue Monday through Friday from 0900 to 1700 hours. In order to accomodate those with later schedules, the DSA office will be open the week of August 4 - August 8 from 1030 to 1900 hours.  You can fit your hat and complete the order form at that time.  The embroidery of your badge number will take approximately two weeks, so please take this into consideration when placing your order.

The hat sells for $22, plus sales tax for a total price of $23.93, which includes the cost for the embroidered badge number.  Purchases may be made by cash or check.  The DSA does not accept credit cards at this time.

If you are a deputy sheriff participating in Urban Shield, it is mandatory you wear the new utility cap for the event.  Please order your caps as soon as possible as these orders will get first priority.  All other sworn staff will be expected to have their new caps in service by the October 2008 range program.

DSA members can email Jon Rudolph and Tim O'Connell by going to the DSA website, www.acsodsa.org.  Members are encouraged to suggest products to include in future DSA offerings.
